Tanewe

Tanewe is a multi-layered documentary about the life of Famatta T. Massalay or as she was nicknamed at a young age, ‘Tanewe.’ The film moves chronologically, starting with Tanewe recalling her childhood in Liberia and the circumstances surrounding her mother’s decision to send her to New York City at the age of eight. While the film addresses difficult issues in Tanewe’s life, like human labor trafficking, sexual assault, and complex racial dynamics (to name a few), it also celebrates her brilliance highlighting her accomplishments while supporting a family. At its heart, the film is about trust and complexities in three generations of a mother-daughter relationship.
